What Makes a Park Significant?

29 Aug

In a May 2011 press release, California Department of Parks and Recreation cited “relative statewide significance” as one of 11 criteria to decide which parks should be closed. But what is significance? What makes a park significant relative to others? Why is such a subjective criteria being used to determine the future of parks that have been around for almost 100 years? These questions troubled me, and I couldn’t answer them myself, so I drove out and talked to people working to protect these parks every day. This video shows highlights of some great and enlightening thoughts on the subject from very committed individuals.

More About The Documentary

By June 2012, 70 California State Parks are scheduled to close. The 2011 Folk4Parks Documentary tells this story through the eyes of individuals and organizations across CA who are fighting to keep these parks open. Folk4Parks.org is interested in understanding the issues around closures, the true costs and savings of closing 70 State Parks, and alternatives Californians can explore to make a different for our public lands.
